This is the testimony of Rwanda genocide survivor Clare Muhinyuza. Clare was one of the first people interviewed by SURF: The Survivor's Fund. Her story is absolutely heartbreaking and I found it to be a moving and powerful video. Sadly, Clare eventually passed away from her injuries. What an unbelievable tragedy.
SURF have a book entitled Survival Against The Odds which is a collection of survivors stories as well as a chronology of events. If you click on the link above, it will take you to the page where you can obtain a copy.
That was so sad and touching at the same time. No one should have to suffer so much and then come out of it only to suffer some more. I do hope she will get a home and full time care some day soon. She is strong and deserves it.
ReplyDeleteDear Emm,
ReplyDeleteWhat an unspeakable tragedy this was. Worse yet, it continues daily to countless women.Genocide in Rwanda is known throughout the world, yet what is done to prevent it? It is a global heartbreak and our own global shame.
Why is the world turning a blind eye to this? It can't be down to oil this time.
ReplyDelete@ Flutietootie: Clare eventually died as a result of her injuries. I got in touch with SURF and they have sent me a book which I will review on here shortly.
ReplyDelete@ Cher & Ryan: The genocide in Rwanda did end in that the widespread murder of Tutsis and moderate Hutus was brought to an end in July 1994. My concern is with future prevention and with applying the lessons learned in Rwanda to the overflow of rape and murder in Congo.
